Chelsea are lining up a move for teenage Rochdale defender Luke Matheson, after impressing in the League One side’s academy, according to ESPN FC.
The 14-year-old has attracted interest from Premier league sides after a run of form for Rochdale’s academy squad which has seen him make the match day squad for the first team twice already.
Manchester United and Chelsea have sent their scouts to watch the youngster in action as Rochdale expect he would develop well enough to feature in first team over the next 18 months.
The Sun suggests that the two Premier league giants have made enquiries ahead of possible moves in the January transfer window.
Rochdale however will be doing their best to keep their wonderkid at Spotland Stadium, but would have their hands full in trying to convince him to forego the hefty pay rise he’ll expect to get if he signs a deal with a top flight club.
Keith Hill who currently manages the League One side has been credited with the development of John Stones and Danny Drinkwater (who is currently at Chelsea).
In my opinion with such a manager in charge of his development, a transfer for the youngster at the moment is too early, but with Man United interested, we could sign him in January and keep loaning him back to Rochdale until he outgrows the League One.
