The trip to Yorkshire might come too soon for the likes of Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante, whose cameos off the bench on Tuesday night were their first tastes of pre-season action after their post-World Cup break.

Despite previously saying that it would be “difficult” to play all three of Ross Barkley, Cesc Fabregas and Jorginho together, Maurizio Sarri could well field that trio against Huddersfield, with Kante building fitness and transfer deadline day capture Mateo Kovacic having signed for the club 48 hours before kick-off.

Despite a poor pre-season, Alvaro Morata would appear likely to lead the line, although there is plenty of doubt over who will flank the Spaniard in attack.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has arguably been Chelsea’s best player on the wing over the summer and may start on the opposite flank to Pedro.

Willian and Hazard’s late returns from the World Cup would perhaps see them start from the bench, but the Brazilian is ahead of his team-mate in terms of preparation and played 68 minutes of the Tuesday night friendly with Lyon – Hudson-Odoi could make way for Willian in the starting XI, then.

Cesar Azpilicueta, Marcos Alonso and Antonio Rudiger are likely starters in the back four, with perhaps David Luiz getting the nod alongside the German centre-back at the heart of the defence having played there in the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City. Andreas Christensen is the alternative.

Maurizio Sarri says he is “unsure” about whether Kepa Arrizabalaga will be given his debut against Huddersfield, so Willy Caballero will be on stand-by to play.
