Arsenal have been dealt a severe blow in the upcoming winter transfer window as it is understood that they will not get the chance to sign Andre Gomes from Barcelona in January.
Arsene Wenger is understood to be keen on reinvigorating his midfield next year and thus Arsenal who were linked with Gomes in last summer’s transfer window still retain an interest.
As early as last week, reports in Spain claimed Barcelona were willing to include Gomes in a swap deal to sign Ozil but Portuguese paper A’Bola The Mirror have revealed that will not happen.
Gomes is a product of Benfica’s academy and established himself as one of Europe’s most talented midfielder at the Portuguese club and later on in Valencia before completing a £44m move to the Camp Nou last year.
However, he has failed to live up to expectations at Barca and is now being linked with a move away.
Despite the 23 year old’s mixed debut season at the Camp Nou, he is still regarded as one of Europe’s most promising deep lying midfielders but it was always going to be highly unlikely for him to move to the Emirates at the midpoint of the season.
Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with Gomes but they will also have to wait until next summer at the very least.
The Portuguese international has been plagued by minor fitness problems of late but returned to the fray to produce an impressive display against Sporting Lisbon.
