Arsenal are understood to be one of six clubs interested in Ajax star Frenkie de Jong, according to reports.

According to Sunday Voetbal international via Daily Cannon, Arsenal have serious interest in signing de Jong but will have to see off competition from five other clubs to sign the player.

Last week, it was claimed that Arsenal had already opened talks with the midfielder’s representatives over a possible switch in January.

The 20 year old has been one of Ajax best players this season and his form has unsurprisingly been noticed by Europe’s top clubs who are all determined to win the battle for his signature.

The youngster was originally expected to cost around £5m but that fee is likely to go a lot higher with so many clubs interested in signing him.

Ajax on their own side are desperate to hold on to the vastly talented midfielder and are already working on offering him a new deal.

The Dutch side do not want to sell but they are aware they may have to let him go if he becomes fascinated by the prospect of playing for one of Europe’s big clubs.

In my opinion, De Jong is a very talented midfielder but if Arsenal are looking for midfield reinforcements, we should be looking at signings capable of making an instant impact on the pitch.

De Jong who will be a great signing for the future still has a lot of work to do to reach Arsenal’s level at the moment.

Should the midfielder opt for a move to the Emirates ahead of other interested clubs, too much should not be expected of the young midfielder immediately, he may initially have to bide his time within the squad or even on loan to acquire some much needed experience.
