Thierry Henry cannot understand why Alexis Sanchez did not take his shot earlier after missing a guilt-edged chance in Manchester United’s loss to Newcastle today.
Newcastle beat old rivals Manchester United 1-0 at St James’ Park thanks to a second-half Matt Ritchie strike.
But the visitors easily could have taken the lead before then.
Sanchez was expertly found by a through ball from Romelu Lukaku 10 minutes into the second half.
The Chilean rounded debutant goalkeeper Martin Dubravka but hesitated with his shot, before eventually seeing it blocked by Newcastle central defender Florian Lejeune.
Henry was surprised at Alexis Sanchez but paid tribute to Lejeune and his Newcastle team-mates.
“I actually don’t know (why he didn’t shoot),” Henry said on Sky Sports.
“Great pass from Romelu Lukaku, I thought he was very good today.
“And now, go around the ball and shoot. He didn’t and he allowed Lejeune to make the recovery there.
“He has a look, I don’t know why he doesn’t shoot before that.
“But what a recovery from Newcastle and as (Jose) Mourinho said, they did fight like animals.
“But you still had the opportunities to kill that game.”
Manchester United remain second in the Premier League table, with Newcastle moving out of the relegation zone and up to 13th.
