Real Madrid are ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea in the race to sign Atletic Bilbao goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, according to reports.
Arrizabalaga’s contract at Bilbao expires at the end of the season and he’s been stalling on a new contract.
It isn’t yet known whether the player is looking to take the next step of his career or holding out for a better deal but Arsenal who have been monitoring his situation at the San Mames for while have been heavily linked with him in recent months.
However, it is Real who are understood to be closing in on the goalkeeper. According to The Daily Cannon, The La Liga giants are prepared to pay £18m for Arizzabalaga in the winter transfer window.
Along with Arsenal, Chelsea are also believed to be keen on the goalkeeper but it is Madrid who currently occupy the driving seat.
However, Madrid could also decide to wait until the summer when they would be able to sign the goalkeeper on a free transfer if the competition for the shot stopper’ services isn’t strong enough.
Arizzabalaga has kept just three clean sheets this summer, shipping 18 goals in the process, which isn’t a promising stat. However, that doesn’t deny the fact that he’s a talented custodian.
As for Arsenal, it’s easy to see why Wenger holds such a serious interest in the young goalkeeper. While Cech remains a very good goalkeeper, he is already 35 and probably past his best.
A keeper like Arizzabalaga will be the perfect signing to come learn from the Czech Republic man with the view of eventually succeeding him.
