Arsenal tried to sign Napoli forward Dries Mertens in the summer, according to reports.

The Belgian was key to Partonopei’s superb campaign last year and he apparently caught the attention of top clubs in the process.

He was quickly rewarded with a new deal but it has emerged that he could have decided to leave if he wanted to.

According to Calcio Mercato via the Mirror, Arsenal showed interest in signing the forward before he signed a new contract.

The Gunners who made signing a new winger one of its summer priority had to turn elsewhere only after the 30 year old committed his future to Napoli.

With Wenger’s failure to strengthen the wide position in the summer, there is still hope for Arsenal to sign Mertens as Napoli included a release clause in the forward’s contract.

The clause is believed to be worth €30m, which is a modest price considering the inflation of the transfer window.

However, I am not so sure Wenger will be willing to pay that much for the winger since he’s already clocked 30.

Mertens can be regarded as a late bloomer as he’s only begun having the best years of his career.

The winger already has seven goals and three assists to his name this season and should he continue to perform the way he is doing at the moment, I am sure Arsenal would face stiff competition for his services.
