Arsenal may soon get the chance to sign long-term target Jose Gimenez from Atletico Madrid.
Wenger tried to sign the Uruguay international last year when we were on the look out for a centre back but ended up signing Shkodran Mustafi.
Arsenal were also linked with the defender in the last transfer window but nothing happened as we didn’t move for a centre back.
How Gimenez future at Atletico has come under question, which is a bit surprising considering he is recently understood to have signed a new deal at Atletico that will keep him there until 2020.
According to Calcio Mercato via Team Talk, Atletico are prepared to sell Gimenez and will listen to offers for his services.
Arsenal and Manchester United are the two clubs believed to be interested in the 22 year old centre back.
Gimenez deal at Atletico was previously set to expire in 2018 and if true that he has signed a new deal until 2020, it does mean the extension was a tactic by the Spanish club to get the possible maximum fee for his departure.
There’s a £58m release clause in Gimenez’s new deal and I am sure Atletico will want interested parties to match that figure. Knowing Arsenal, it is unlikely we’ll go that high especially as the Spanish club are privately receptive to a transfer.
A strong defender, good on the ball, Gimenez is one of Europe’s talented young defenders but has found himself in and out of Atletico’s first team in recent months, making just 10 appearances this season. Above away to a top club with guarantees over game time will definitely appeal to him.
