Antonio Conte believes players should be keen about playing for a club rather than the manager.

These days, players tend to join a club because of the manager in charge and it’s fast becoming a norm for players to speak glowingly of the manager more than the club when they are newly transferred.

And Conte doesn’t believe it is the right thing to do for a player who wants to play at the top.

Chelsea were handed a huge blow on transfer deadline day by Barkley when he snubbed a move to Stamford Bridge.

Although the player revealed he turned down the move because he wants to concentrate on recuperating from his injury, reports have since emerged that it was because he couldn’t speak with Conte personally.

Not only Barkley, some of Chelsea targets like Danilo and Lukaku joined Man City and Man Utd after Speaking with Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho respectively, suggesting that Conte was less involved in Chelsea’s transfer dealings.

When asked whether he had signed players before without speaking to them first, Conte said: “Yes, as quoted by Standard Sport.

“When you stay at Juventus and every single player wants to come, they arrive whether they speak or not to the head coach. If a player has great desire to play for a great club, he signs.

“When I was at Juventus, players signed for Juventus. Not for the manager.”

Conte subsequently revealed that sometimes it could be important for a manager to speak with players during transfer negotiations while other times, it is not.

“I can reply to you from my previous experience in Italy. Sometimes it’s important. Other times it’s not.

“Before giving my opinion to the club, I try to take my information about the player, about his attitude, his behaviour, about the right characteristics, and then I give my opinion to the club.”

It remains to be seen whether Conte will now be more involved in Chelsea’s transfer negotiations in the future. Mourinho, Wenger, Klopp, Guardiola use this tactic to devastating effect and Conte may need to adopt this in order to compete for the best players.
