Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has revealed that Olivier Giroud’s resolve to play first team football in preparation for the 2018 world cup is the reason behind his transfer to Chelsea.
Giroud’s who was formally Arsenal’s main striker fell down the pecking order following the signing of Alexandre Lacazette in the summer which resulted in his making only one Premier League appearance this season and with the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, his chances of earning enough playing time which will determine if he would feature in the world cup has been put in further jeopardy.
The Frenchman who has scored 105 goals in 253 games during his five and a half year stay in North London joined the Blues in an £18m deal on the last day of the winter transfer window.
Wenger in a press conference confessed that they were sad to let him go but they couldn’t stand in his way even if it meant selling him to a club they would be playing against. He also added that his family also influenced the decision as Giroud just had a third baby making it difficult for him to leave London.
The France international on the other hand is very excited and looking forward to make his debut at his new club.
“I wanted to stay in the Premier League, and Chelsea for me is perfect because I can even stay in London. It is very exciting and I’m looking forward to it”, he told Chelsea website. (via BBC Sports).
