Olivier Giroud has been told he may have to leave the Emirates in January if he wants to play a starring role in France’s world cup team.
The striker has been a key part of the Les Blues side in recent years but his place in the team is under threat due to his situation at Arsenal.
Giroud is yet to start a league game for Arsenal this term and has only managed 234 minutes of action so far. He’s struggling to displace Alexandre Lacazette from Wenger’s starting xi and that is set to have an impact on his international future.
During the last international break, Deschamps sent a warning to Giroud that he has to be playing regularly and now the French manager’s assistant has hinted that the striker risks missing out of the world cup squad if his situation at Arsenal doesn’t change.
“It’s clear that he’s not playing enough and Didier has already had the chance to talk about it,” Deschamps’s assistant Stephane told TF1, as quoted by Goal. “He has to find a solution in the coming weeks.
“It’s up to him to see. He’s been very good in the last couple of months, he’s featured a lot and scored important goals, so now he has to play a lot.”
This would be worrying for Giroud whose goal secured France a place in Russia. It’s going to be a big blow for the striker if he misses out on the tournament as this may be his last opportunity to play on the biggest stage.
Whether he’ll try to force a move away from the Emirates in January remains to be seen. However, he had the chance to decide his future in the summer but chose to stay. So he may have to live with his decision..
