Just days after their title bid suffered a huge dent, Brendan Rodgers has come out in praise of striker Luis Suarez. The forward was named as the recipient of the much coveted PFA Player of the Year award on Sunday. He is amongst the select top players in the world to have received this award. The 26-year-old has become one of the most lethal strikers in world football. Even though he could not find a way past the Chelsea defence on Sunday, Liverpool will still be confident of winning the title.
Suarez came close to leaving Liverpool in the summer after bids from Arsenal were rejected. Real Madrid were also rumoured to be interested in the forward. Despite such interest, Liverpool managed to convince the player to sign a new long-term contract. Suarez is now one of the highest-paid players in the world, but he could have easily been playing for another club this season. He said:
“A player of Luis Suarez’s ability has to be playing at this level. His loyalty in staying at Liverpool, to continue to fight for the club to get us there, is remarkable really.
“Hopefully he gets the rewards for that with those big European nights next season.”
Rodgers says that Suarez has chosen the right decision to stay at Merseyside. The Liverpool fans, widely acknowledged to be one of the most loyal, have taken to Suarez as their next hero. After Liverpool have qualified for the Champions League group stages, it is almost certain that the striker will stay at the club for the coming seasons.
