Chelsea are understood to have joined the race to sign Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil, according to reports.
Ozil is yet to sign a contract extension at Arsenal despite his current contract expiring at the end of the season and several European clubs are reportedly keeping an eye on his situation with the hope of signing him on a free transfer if he doesn’t commit his future before then.
Arsenal are keen to extend the player’s contract and a final decision is expected to be made on his future later this month.
According to Sport Bild via Daily Cannon, Chelsea are the latest club to join the race to sign the German.
The report suggests Chelsea are gradually emerging as the German’s favorite destination because of his excessive wage demands.
The Blues have a history of spending big and it is believed that Ozil’s wage demands which is putting off Manchester United and Barcelona won’t be a problem for Roman Abramovich.
While the link to Manchester United is understandable because Mourinho may wants to reunite with the German, the link to Chelsea sounds surprising.
The Blues are well stocked with attacking midfielders and deploy a formation similar to the Gunners which permits them to field a maximum of two at a time.
Ozil has however always stated he is happy here and I believe that hasn’t changed which begs the question as to why Wenger isn’t pushing hard enough to tie the World Cup winner on a new deal.
It is likely down to finance, which I believe can be resolved before the end of the season.
