Arsenal are poised to open contract talks with young winger Reiss Nelson.
The youngster who has been very impressive with his performances in the Cup competitions for the Gunners this season has been unsurprisingly backed to go on to develop into a top class winger.
Following the loss of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in last summer’s transfer window, the 17-year-old has now established himself in the senior squad as a back up to Hector Bellerin in the right wing back role, featuring prominently in both the Carabao Cup and the Europa League.
With less than two years on his current contract which runs out in 2019, Wenger is understood to be prepared to open talks with the player’s representatives regarding a new and improved deal.
According to Evening Standard via Daily Cannon, Arsenal want to extend his contract to ensure he is tied down for the long-term to prevent rival clubs from swooping for him as in the cases of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and potentially Alexis Sanchez.
This would represent a positive change from the Gunners boss learning from his recent mistakes of leaving contracts far too late before discussing renewals.
Recently, Arsenal have moved to secure the futures of a couple of their younger players.
Calum Chambers signed a new contract in the summer, while Joe Willock recently signed a contract extension until 2021.
Whilst Gooners may have been expecting more exciting news on the contract renewal front, it should also be noted that Nelson is arguably Arsenal’s brightest prospect in the youth ranks.
Contract talks for Jack Wilshere are scheduled to take place next month while Mesut Ozil has not ruled out extending his stay with the Gunners beyond the current campaign.
