Arsene Wenger is understood to have passed up the chance to sign Manchester City playmaker David Silva.

The Spanish international could very well have turned out for the Gunners rather than our opponents in last Super Sunday clash at the Etihad had Wenger made Valencia an offer in 2005.

According to reports, the Gunners scouting department had identified Silva as an ideal recruit some 12 years ago, while the player was already oozing class and showing a lot of potential to offer even more, the gaffer was however concerned about the player’s ability to adapt to the physically demanding Premier League.

It is the Daily Mail via Daily Cannon that reports that Arsenal scout, Francis Cagagio, responsible for the signings of Cesc Fabregas and Hector Bellerín, also identified Silva as a possible recruit 12 years ago.

However, with the strength of the Gunners’ options at the time (including Fabregas himself, who had recently signed), and fears that Silva would struggle with the Premier League’s physicality, made Arsenal turn him down.

While Gooners would be quick to add the World Cup winner to the admittedly long list of top class players that Wenger has missed out on as Gunners boss, this time, there is a good reason for which he passed up on Silva.

Football in England over a decade ago was far more physical than what it is today with no managers willing to take a chance nimble midfield technicians.

City who also monitored the player during his time in Spain had to wait another 5 years before signing him.

In recent times, with the league getting a bit more technical and tactical and a lot less physical, Wenger has signed a player of similar ilk in Santi Carzola while also promoting Jack Wilshere to the senior squad.
