Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are set to go head to head in the race to sign Riyad Mahrez when the January transfer window opens, according to reports.
Mahrez wanted to leave the King Power stadium in the summer but was unable to secure a move away as no club was willing to meet Leicester’s price tag.
Arsenal were linked with Mahrez throughout the summer but Wenger didn’t make an official bid, despite admitting he is a big fan of the Algerian.
According to a report in BBC via HITC Sports, Arsenal will renew their interest in Mahrez in January but this time will face competition from Spurs.
Roma came closest to signing the midfielder in the summer but dropped their interest because of Leicester’s reluctance to reduce their £50m valuation.
Arsenal were quoted the same price when the club inquired about Mahrez, forcing Wenger to focus all his attention on Monaco’s Thomas Lemar.
Wenger is already on the look out for a potential replacement for Alexis Sanchez who is expected to leave in the summer and it is only logical for Mahrez’s name to be thrown forward.
However, just like the summer transfer window, I don’t think the Leicester City man will be Wenger’s first choice to replace Sanchez, maybe an alternative option.
