Athletic Bilbao have confirmed that Aymeric Laporte’s release clause has been paid in full, and he is now free to leave the club. According to ESPN.

Althletic Bilbao did not name the club that triggered the release clause in their statement on the club website, but Goal has revealed that as widely expected, it’s Manchester City who have triggered his €65 million release clause.

The club went ahead to thank the player for his contribution to the club.

On January 29, 2018, the Spanish Football League (LFP) has certified to our club that player Aymeric Laporte has complied with the requirements to end unilaterally his contract that linked him with Athletic Club.

“The cited note points out that the player has stated his wish to end and resolve unilaterally his contractual relationship that had started in the 2009-10 campaign and has deposited the compensation fee that was established in his contract. Athletic wants to thank the player for his contribution throughout the time he has been at the club.

The French center back who is only the second Frenchman to ever play for Bilbao was close to joining Man City last summer, but rejected the move at the last minute and signed a contract extension till 2020.

Pep Guardiola reignited interest this January and rivals Manchester United threatened to hijack the deal as they did Alexis Sanchez, but this time the player will be heading to Manchester City to sign a six-year deal with the club.

He said his goodbye to the club and fans with a heartfelt message.

I want to thank you for all you have given me. I arrived as a teenager and I’ve developed as a player and as a person here.

“I don’t want my departure, due to a new challenge in my professional career, to be a farewell but rather until next we meet. I leave a unique club, different, that I will never forget.”
