Barcelona striker Luis Suarez was crucial to the deal that saw Lucas Torreira become an Arsenal player, according to the Daily Express.
The Gunners have had a busy transfer window in which they have signed five players including Matteo Guendouzi, Bernd Leno, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Lucas Torreira. However, it was a player who they missed out on signing, years ago that helped convince the latter to join the Gunners.
Luis Suarez came very close to moving to the Emirates from Liverpool in 2013 after they had triggered his release clause with a bid of £40 million plus £1, but Liverpool refused to sell and he moved to Barcelona a year later for around double that amount.
The striker’s agent Pablo Bentancur has now revealed that Luis Suarez recommendation helped Torreira decide to move. “The recommendation of Luis Suarez was decisive for Torreira to arrive at Arsenal,” he said.
The Gunners completed the signing of the midfielder from Sampdoria for £24 million to replace departed Jack Wilshere after an impressive World Cup display alongside Luis Suarez for Uruguay.
After completing the signing of Suarez’s international teammate, the Gunners are currently interested in his club teammate Ousmane Dembele, and they would be hoping he can also help them pull a deal off.
