Monaco Vadim Vasilyev has revealed that Benjamin Mendy had no interest in joining Chelsea in the just concluded summer transfer window.
Mendy was at the centre of a protracted move to City in the summer and it has now emerged that he only wanted to move to the Etihad.
Monaco didn’t want to sell the defender and rejected several bids for his services but a huge bid from City and his persistence to work with Guardiola eventually forced the French club to give into his demands.
Vasilyev has now revealed that in the process of holding out for a move to City, Mendy derided Chelsea by stating he would have stayed at Monaco if it were the Stamford Bridge club that was pushing to sign him.
“Bernardo Silva and [Tiemoue] Bakayoko, it was done [their moves to City and Chelsea],” Vasilyev told French newspaper L’Equipe, as quoted by the Express.
“The third possible exit was Mendy which we had long resisted.
“And then, given the offers we had for him and his willingness to leave, we wondered if he would be able to repeat the same season. It was complex.
“At first, I said, ‘No, you’re staying.
“He replied, ‘But Vadim, I really want to go to City with [Pep] Guardiola.’
“Several times he said to me, ‘If it was Chelsea, I would stay, but this is Guardiola, I want to go there.’
“He was frank with me. So when City put that price, when it became the most expensive defender in the world, I had no more arguments to oppose it.”
“We weighed the pros and cons and we told him.”
Chelsea were indeed in the market for a left back in the summer transfer window but Conte only wanted Juventus Alex Sandro. The Italian wanted the Brazilian fullback at all cost, as a result we never really considered a move for Mendy even though some reports claimed we were monitoring his situation.
That said, Mendy’s desire to remain at Monaco if it was Chelsea chasing him sums up the club’s transfer window.
