Mesut Ozil may get the chance to return to his boyhood club Schalke 04.
The German has been heavily linked with Barcelona and Manchester United in recent weeks but a move to Schalke may well now be on the cards.
Ozil spent a large chunk of his youth career at Schalke but quickly moved to Weder Bremen after he became a professional, making just 35 senior appearance after breaking into the first team.
Ambitious Schalke have now revealed via its chairman Clemens Tonnies that they are interested in signing Ozil.
“I could very easily imagine Mesut returning to us, and it is the same for him, Tonnies said as quoted by the Mirror.
Ozil’s refusal to sign a new contract at Arsenal has seen reports linking him with a January move away from the Emirates but Tonnies has ruled out the possibility of Ozil leaving in the new year.
He added: “I am certain that no deal will take place during the course of this season.”
This means Arsenal are set to lose Ozil for nothing in the summer unless he signs a new deal before then. The German joined Arsenal in 2013 and has gone on to become a key player for the team. Before then, he spent three years at Madrid, which succeded a two year spell at Weder Bremen.
Arsenal fans are hoping he stays longer with us but there appears to be no chance of that happening at the moment as he closes in on the end of his contract here.
