It is more frustrating news to report for the Gunners on the just concluded window. Whilst it was widely believed that Monaco winger Thomas Lemar and new Paris Saint-Germain sensation Kylian Mbappe were the only genuine targets Wenger missed out on, albeit for very different reasons, it has now been reported that the gaffer also tried and failed to sign French midfielder Blaise Matuidi during the window.
Le10sport via The Daily Cannon reports that the 30-year-old midfielder who moved to Juventus from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, rejected interest from a host of Premier League teams, the report goes on to further claim that the Gunners were joined by Premier League rivals Manchester United and Manchester City in showing an interest.
Arsenal were alerted by Matuidi’s intention to leave the Parc des Princes after he rejected a contract extension. The French international was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates at the start of the window in what would have been a shrewd signing with several Gooners already fantasizing about the arrival of a top midfielder with the needed power and quality to excel in the Premier League.
While we Gooners are all left to rue missing out on another quality player, to be fair to Wenger, getting Matuidi was always going to be a difficult act without the lure of Champions League football.
The French star has annually turned out in the competition for PSG since his arrival from St. Etienne in 2011 and as expected opted for a switch to Juventus who, like PSG, heavily dominate their domestic league.
