Antonio Conte insists the secret to beating Barcelona will NOT be by trying to focus all their attention on Lionel Messi.
Chelsea sailed through to the FA Cup quarter-finals on Friday evening with a comfortable 4-0 win over Hull.
Conte was able to rest star players such as Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante for the match meaning they would be fresh for the first leg against Barcelona on Tuesday (7.45pm).
Fellow Premier League sides Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham all picked up great results in their first respective first leg ties and the pressure is on Chelsea to do the same.
But they arguably face the toughest draw out of all the English sides with Barcelona sitting top of La Liga.
If Chelsea harbour any hopes of progressing to the next stage it will be imperative they pick up a positive at home in the first leg.
Messi has surprisingly never scored against the Stamford Bridge outfit through his career despite playing them eight times.
However, Conte insists his side will not be putting their sole attention on preventing the Argentina international breaking his duck against Chelsea.
“I hope that we maintain this tradition but we are speaking about a fantastic player,” Conte said.
“We must have great respect but at the same time we must be excited to play this type of game and take on this type of challenge,” Conte told reporters.
“It won’t be easy because we know very well this player. We are talking about one of the best players in the world. But we for sure will work together, work with the team, but not just to try to stop him: if we focus on just man-marking Messi, it can be very dangerous.
“We have been analysing this team for a long time; we started one month ago and analysed this team. We are speaking about one of the best teams in the world. We have to try to have the perfect game and to try to make the best decisions also for this type of team.
“This is a different opponent. They have a fantastic characteristic with the ball, but they can have a weakness without the ball and we must try to exploit this.”
