Liverpool’s bargain buy striker Daniel Sturridge has been red-hot since the start of the season scoring in every one of Liverpool’s games.
During last Sundays match against Manchester United that Liverpool won 1-0 thanks to the former Chelsea players 4th minute header, the Reds striker picked up a groin injury that will see him sidelined at least for tonight’s World Cup qualifying match against Moldova at Wembley.
Moldova is ranked 123 in the world by Fifa, and should easily be beaten by England who won their last meeting at the Zimbru Stadium in Chisinau 5-0.
Also missing for tonight’s match will be fellow England striker Wayne Rooney after receiving a gash in training that required twelve stiches to a head wound.
In their place we will see Southampton’s Ricky Lambert who should prove to be an adequate replacement for the Manchester and Liverpool pair.
Four days later England travel to Kiev to take on the Ukraine with Sturridge also expected to not be available leading England manager Roy Hodgeson to say: “We won’t know until training on Sunday if Daniel Sturridge will be fit for the Ukraine game.
“We’ve not been lucky with injuries, we’ve lost five players, but it’s an opportunity for others and up to them to do a job.”
Liverpool’s next opponent in the Premiership is Swansea City away on the 16th of September which will be a good test for the so far unbeaten Liverpool.
Liverpool are short on striking options after sending Fabio Borini away on loan to Sunderland, while Luis Suarez is still sitting out a ten-match ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic.
This makes me think that Rodgers will do whatever he can to stop Sturridge from playing against Ukraine for fear of aggravating the injury as he would love to keep the unbeaten run going and remain top of the Premiership.
