Atletico Madrid are hopeful of signing Diego Costa when the transfer window opens in January, according to Sports Mole.
The Spanish giants tried to sign Costa all summer but couldn’t agree a fee with Chelsea. The Blues wanted £50m for the striker but Atletico weren’t willing to pay that much.
The Spaniard’s transfer ban coupled with Costa’s antics complicated negotiations and they were willing to take their time to negotiate with Chelsea.
Atletico president Enrique Cerezo has now suggested his club will return for the striker in January and they are hopeful of signing him in then.
Speaking about the club’s interest in Costa, Cerezo said:
“We cannot sign anyone until January, hopefully by then Costa and many others will come,” The Sun quotes him as saying.
Chelsea remain determined to get maximum value for the striker. It is for this reason he was left out of the club’s Champions League squad so he won’t be cup tied when he eventually seals a transfer away from the club.
Costa is still in Brazil, despite calls for him to return to England. He is being fined fortnightly by Chelsea and that seems not to have deterred the 28 year old who apparently thinks going on strike is the best way to force a move away from the club.
