Arsene Wenger has confirmed Manchester United tried to sign him as a replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson.
Former Manchester United Chairman Edwards, last week revealed Wenger was his first choice to replace Ferguson in 2001 and held several meetings with the French man but his loyalty to Arsenal forced them to consider other options.
Wenger has now confirmed Manchester United’s interest but claimed he turned down their advances because of his happiness at Arsenal.
Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain also tried to sign the manager but his response was the same he gave to United.
“I am always very confidential,” Wenger said,as quoted by Standard Sports.
“Maybe one day I will reveal all the contacts [over switching jobs] I had during my stay at Arsenal. It would make a few chapters. You should ask Martin Edwards.
“I was always happy here. Were the people happy with me? I don’t know.”
When asked why he decided to stay loyal despite the offers from other top clubs, Wenger continued: “Because I love the values of this club.
For me the club is about values first.”
“One day it would be a good chat to have with the press to look at the evolution. It would be very interesting to look at Manchester United over the last 20 years. A lot has changed.
“But when I came here this club was about values that I love in sport. That’s why I’m still in the competition.
“So I always question myself. Yes of course Manchester United is attractive. But am I happy here? The answer was yes.”
Wenger have found himself on the wrong side of the fans in recent months, with some protesting against him last season.
The manager is aware how some fans now feel about him and would feel he deserves better considering all he has given to the club in his 21 years he’s been here.
