Former Gunner Alexander Hleb says he can’t call Alexandre Lacazette a world class signing.
Arsenal spent £52m on the French striker in the summer, in what was a club record deal for the Gunners.
Lacazette has made a decent start to life at the Emirates, scoring four goals in his first six Premier League games but Hleb is still not convinced that the French man is the world class striker Gooners have been clamoring for.
Hleb was speaking in an interview with the Independent before Arsenal’s Europa League game against Borisov, having featured for both clubs.
While the former midfielder believes Lacazette is a good signing, he doesn’t think he is an upgrade to Giroud.
“Football is a crazy world now. The market is crazy, there is just so much money involved. Arsenal would have wanted to sign more players but it’s too difficult to compete with the likes of Manchester City and PSG.
“The signings that did come through are good, like Alexandre Lacazette, but I can’t say that’s a ‘fantastic’ signing. I am a fan of Giroud and I don’t think Lacazette is better than him. I think the two are on the same level.”
So far, Lacazette has done well and I think he has proven he can be a world class striker. The forward has already scored a couple of goals and could’ve had more if he was a little bit lucky.
I don’t know Hleb’s criteria of judging the striker but Wenger clearly feels Lacazette is a better striker than Giroud, the reason the former is the club’s first choice.
