Arsene Wenger says he is convinced Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil want to stay at Arsenal.
The duo are yet to sign contract extensions, despite their current deal running out at the end of the season. Both players were instrumental in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Tottenham on Saturday and Wenger was full of praises for them in his post match press conference.
When asked about the duo’s future in the aftermath of the game, the boss admitted that the win over Tottenham will not be enough to convince them to stay but he believes they love the club and would want to stay.
“I am convinced they love the club and love the team, but all the rest will be decided – when? I don’t really know,” said Wenger, as reported by the Daily Cannon.
“I believe they love the club and want to stay, but there are other top clubs out there who offer good contracts as well.”
Arsenal fans wouldn’t take Wenger’s comments seriously especially in Sanchez’s case.
We might understand if he was referring to Ozil. The German has always insisted he is happy at the Emirates while Sanchez’s case is different. The Chilean silently pushed for an exit last summer transfer window, so it would be difficult to convince us that he wants to stay.
Ozil may want to stay after all, it does appear that finance is the reason he is yet to sign a new deal. Once that can be resolved, I am sure there will be a big announcement.
