Shkodran Mustafi reportedly asked to leave Arsenal during the just summer transfer window.
The defender was the subject of interest from Inter Milan but a move didn’t materialize as both clubs involved in negotiations couldn’t reach an agreement.
According to BBC journalist David Ornstein via a report in the Daily Cannon, who has been giving a detailed explanation on Arsenal’s transfer window, Mustafi asked to leave Arsenal after learning of Inter’s interest and the club was happy to let him go. The club was reportedly disappointed with his performances last season and didn’t feel there was any need to hold on to him at all cost.
“Shkodran Mustafi asked to leave, which suited Arsenal because it gave them the chance to replace a player they were disappointed with last season, except they failed to land a replacement.”
However, Arsenal couldn’t sign a replacement, which eventually blocked Mustafi’s exit.
West Brom’s Johnny Evans was reportedly identified as the German’s replacement but the Baggies reluctance to sell, meant we had to keep our man.
The news about Mustafi will be worrying, considering all hopes were on him and Koscielny to provide defensive solidity to the team.
He’s only featured once for Arsenal this season which is most likely down to the speculations surrounding his future. Now that the transfer window is over, he will need to turn things around quickly.
