Arsene Wenger’s plans of strengthening his squad next summer with the acquisition of Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has been dealt a severe blow with reports claiming the Red Devils are not open to idea of selling their versatile forward, especially to Arsenal.
With star forward Alexis Sanchez set to depart the Emirates in one of the next two windows coupled with the difficulty in trying to finalize a deal for Thomas Lemar last summer, Wenger who is was understood to be monitoring a few top talents around Europe capable of replacing the Chilean had targeted Martial who has made just one league start for the Red Devils since the start of the season.
The 21-year-old striker is understood to be worried as to why he is currently not in the first team despite his assured performances in his substitute appearances off the bench. For a player who intends to make the vastly talented French squad for the World next summer, the player’s concern is understandable.
The Frenchman suffered a little dip in form last year but looks reborn this season as he continues to fight his way back into the first team.
Following his arrival from Monaco two years ago as a teenager, Martial immediately took the Premier League in his wake finishing as the Red Devils top scorer.
Personal problems off the pitch meant he struggled to replicate such high standards last season, with five goals and six assits thus far this season, Martial seems back to his best.
With Wenger’s long history of recruiting very talented compatriots, his interest in the player came with no surprise.
However, according to the Daily Star via Daily Cannon, Wenger’s plans of signing Martial have been brought to an abrupt end as a source from Old Trafford has stated that there’s no chance of the transfer happening.
“Arsenal have no chance of getting Anthony Martial,” the source said. “He is happy at the club and even if he did want to leave, he wouldn’t be sold to Arsenal.”
Mourinho seems set to continue his trend of blocking his players moving to the Emirates. On more than one occasion, the special one has refused to sell a squad to the Gunners in the past.
In the summer of 2013, he refused to let a third choice Demba Ba join Arsenal on loan because he didn’t want to strengthen a rival, a year later he also vehemently opposed the idea of Petr Cech moving to the Emirates even though he was second choice in goal at the time.
