Sevilla defender Federico Fazio is close to signing a deal with English Premier League club Liverpool for a reported transfer fee of £5m for the Argentine star.
Fazio was on the verge of joining Zenit St Petersburg in the January transfer window after his club accepted a €6 million offer, but the Argentine defender finally decided to stay at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
Despite the sale of Diego Lopaz to Real Madrid earlier, Sevilla’s difficult financial situation is not yet improved and as a result of this, Fazio is expected to leave the club at the end of the season.
The 25-year-old showed his interest in playing in the Premier League after he leaves Los Rojiblancos.
“Playing in the Premier League, in Italy or Germany would be good someday,” said the Argentine in an interview given to the Estadio Deportivo.
“If they came now, the door would be open. I have a few years left on my contract with Sevilla but I could leave in the summer.”
Liverpool have already signed Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea to reinforce their forward, and are now looking to strengthen their defense and Fazio’s move to Liverpool can be one such step towards this. However, they might be facing a stiff competition for the player’s signature.
Liverpool sees Fazio as a perfect replacement for Martin Skrtel, who might be leaving the club after falling out with boss Brendan Rodgers.
Federico Fazio, has played 111 La Liga matches for Sevilla so far, scoring 10 goals for his club.
Meanwhile, Liverpool player Jamie Carragher revealed his frustration for playing more regularly for the club and revealed that the 34-year-old is unsure whether he will be offered a new contract at the end of the season.
