Arsene Wenger’s plans to strengthen the Gunners’ frontline with the acquisition of long-term target Karim Benzema is set to be threatened yet again by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.
The French international striker has been annually linked with a move to the Emirates for a while now with Wenger a known admirer of the forward.
Several Gunners enquiries have however been knocked back over the years as the Spanish giants remained keen on holding on to Benzema who also happens to be a favorite of Perez.
Following the summer arrival of Alexandre Lacazette, Wenger was understood to have ended his interest in the player, however following what has been a dismal start to the campaign by Benzema, the Real Madrid hierarchy are open to the idea of letting him leave next year.
Recent reports from Spain have now revealed that with the player now available, Wenger is set to reignite his interest in the player he still very much adores.
It is Diario Gol via Tribal Football that has claimed Arsenal’s recent interest in signing Benzema has been relayed to Real president Florentino Perez via Benzema’s intermediaries.
While all parties involved are understood to be open to the deal, Perez could still deny Wenger his wish to sign his compatriot over the player’s valuation.
The stumbling block is Arsenal’s rigid offer, with it being made clear to Perez they won’t go higher than €40m. For his part, the Real president rates the striker closer to €60m mark.
Despite not being a like for like replacement, it is rumoured that Wenger wants to sign Benzema as a replacement for Alexis Sanchez.
The Chilean is set to depart the Emirates in one of the next two windows and Benzema could very well replace the goals Alexis would take away from the team.
