Manchester City have set their sights on signing Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte before the end of the January transfer window, according to the Mirror.
The Citizens are in the hunt for a defender and had been linked with a move for West Brom’s Jonny Evans, but they have turned their attention to Laporte who is 7 years younger, as they feel he represents a better long term investment.
The France international has drawn attention from all over Europe, with Man United and Chelsea among those credited with interest in him.
He initially rejected an approach from Man City in 2016 when Guardiola first arrived, and recounting the reason he rejected the move, he said: “How did I say no to Pep? By looking at the pros and cons.
“I spoke with him for a long time, as well as with my club. I also looked at my family, my entourage.
“It wasn’t too early. It was just pros and cons – amount of time on the pitch, me recovering from injury.
“These aren’t easy things to think about at my age. In the end, I had to make a choice. I did, and I’m happy.“
The Daily Star believe he is still on City’s radar and they are willing to meet his £57 million release clause to sign him.
Man United recently stole Alexis Sanchez from right under City’s nose, and signing one of United targets will prove some measure of revenge.
