Arsenal are looking to sign defender Chris Smalling from Man United after completing a swap deal which saw Alexis Sanchez and Henrikh Mhkitaryan switch clubs, according to the Express.

Arsene Wenger has been a long term admirer of the center back, after losing out to United in the race for his signature in 2010. He is now set to make a move for the defender this January, as he believes United will be willing to do a deal soon after concluding Alexis Sanchez transfer.

According to the Gambling Times, Arsenal have received positive response from United to their enquiry about the availability of the center back, although they want Eric Bailly back to fitness first before they sanction a deal for the 28-year-old towering center back.

The Sun reveals that Arsene Wenger had earlier asked for Smalling to be part of the swap deal for Sanchez but was rejected, however, with Eric Bailly returning from injury, the England international will see his game time markedly decrease.

Chris Smalling has 18 months left on his current deal with an option to extend by a further 12 months, after losing his place in the national team and playing back up to Eric Baily, he might feel the time is right to move.
