Borussia Dortmund are set to sell defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos after he rejected an offer to extend his contract at the club, according to Inside Futbol.
The 29-year-old is entering the final year of his current contract and according to reports has recently turned down an offer of extension from the club.
Jose Mourinho is interested in the Greece international defender, but with the experience Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Shinji Kagawa previously had at United, Papastathpoulos will have his hesitations about moving to the Old Trafford.
The Greek defender has been on Arsenal’s radar for a while and the Gunners now need a new defender with Laurent Koscielny sidelined till the end of the year with a serious injury.
They face competition from Manchester United, but its the Gunners who are in pole position to sign him as they enjoy the advantage of having former Dortmund Chief scout Sven Mislintat on their staff at the Emirates.
Should the move happen, he’ll be the third former Dortmund player to move to the Emirates in recent times, after Henrik Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang arrived in January.
