Juan Mata has revealed some of his friends and family were concerned for his future when Jose Mourinho was appointed as Manchester United boss.

Jose Mourinho replaced Louis van Gaal in the summer of 2016 to reunite with Mata at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese boss was the man who sold the midfielder to the Red Devils when he was in charge at Chelsea.

There were reports of friction between the pair but Mata denied there were ever any problems.

“I faced it naturally,” he told Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo.

“It’s true I received calls from concerned friends and family but I knew that I didn’t have any personal problems with Mourinho at Chelsea.

“What hurt me is that they spread rumours and lies about what did not happen.”

Mata has been one of the key performers since Mourinho took charge and the club triggered his one-year contract extension last month with his original four-and-a-half year deal due to expire at the end of the season.

And Mourinho recently reminded journalists of how his relationship with Mata was scrutinised upon his arrival.

“Mata is important. Mata is very important,” he said.

”He is another one, big story when I arrived one-and-a-half years ago.

“‘Mata in trouble, in trouble, in trouble’. Now he’s getting an extension of one more year.

“An important player for me, an important player for the club, an important player for the other players.”
