Chelsea have officially confirmed Mateo Kovacic has joined the club on a season-long loan deal from Real Madrid.
It is understood Kovacic was offered as part of a £35m deal which will see the Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois sign with the Champions League winners.
It is understood Courtois was in Belgium on Wednesday morning awaiting permission from Chelsea to fly to Madrid to undergo a medical.
Courtois has long been linked with Madrid, while Kovacic has spent the summer forcing an exit from the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Croatian previously played for Inter and had been tipped for a return to Serie A but will instead form a new-look midfield alongside Jorginho and N’Golo Kante under Sarri.
He was part of Croatia’s squad but played just 183 minutes of their run to the final.
The midfielder was limited to just 10 La Liga appearances last season.
He told Marca earlier this year: “I understand the situation but that’s why I think it’s best for me to go to another club where I will have the chance to play regularly as a starter.”
