Manchester United are reportedly plotting a move for Napoli star Dries Mertens in the summer transfer window.
Mertens has scored 89 goals in 230 games for Napoli since joining the club back in 2013 but the 30-year-old is being heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford at the end of the season.
The Belgian only began playing as a centre forward in 2016 and has taken Serie A by storm since changing position, finishing behind Edin Dzeko in the 2016/17 goalscoring chart.
According to The Sun, Jose Mourinho has personally contacted Mertens’ representatives over a possible move to United ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
The striker has a £25million release clause in his contract at Napoli and Mourinho believes such a fee could prove to be a bargain.
Marouane Fellaini could be heading in the opposite direction to Napoli but Mourinho is hoping that the midfielder will sign a new deal at United.
Asked about Fellaini’s contract situation, Mourinho said:
‘I’m still positive. He’s important, he’s a player that I like but again, especially for him, he has a different position in relation to other players with his contract because we can control other players’ destiny in another way. ‘In Marouane’s case, the destiny is in his hands. He knows I want him to stay and the club wants him to stay.
‘He has an offer from us and it’s up to him yes or no.
‘I am still positive as he likes to be here, he likes the feeling of the manager trusting him and I think there is a good chance for him to stay. But if he leaves, so be it.’
