Man United hierarchy have given Jose Mourinho their backing in his pursuit of Arsenal’s star attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil, according to Metro.
The world class playmaker is out of contract at the end of the season and will be available on a free transfer in the summer.
But Mourinho is keen on signing him up this January as he looks to strengthen his squad, and he has received a go ahead from the club board to bid up to £35 million to secure his signature.
The German international is free to talk to foreign clubs already in the Bosman rule, with PSG and Bayern Munich very much interested, as such Jose Mourinho would prefer to sign the playmaker now rather than taking the risk of waiting till June.
Arsene Wenger has repeated in recent times that he wants the German maestro to extend his deal, and Ozil has been holding out for a contract in the region of £300,000-a-week, a sum which could make him the highest paid player in the league.
United are willing to open negotiations with the player, even though Wenger claimed last month that United had not made and approach and Ozil will remain at Arsenal for the rest of the season.
If Ozil insists on not signing a new deal, a bid of £35 million would seriously test Arsenal’s resolve, as they risk losing a player they signed for £42 million in 2014 for nothing.
