Jose Mourinho has revealed that Nemanja Matic promised to join Manchester United before Chelsea had won the Premier League title in 2017.
The Serbian midfielder made the move to Old Trafford last summer after winning the league title in Antonio Conte’s first season at Stamford Bridge.
Matic had already won the Premier League under Mourinho at Chelsea in 2015, and the Portuguese was keen to bring the 29-year-old to United.
And Mourinho has revealed that Matic had vowed to leave Chelsea after their title-winning campaign under Conte.
‘Matic last March in 2017 told me: ‘I want to play for you and play for Manchester United and I’m going to do it’,’ Mourinho said at United’s end-of-season awards dinner on Tuesday evening. ‘And he made it happen.’
Matic won United’s Goal of the Season award for his strike against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, and the midfielder took the opportunity to praise Mourinho.
‘This is a great club, a great team and we also have a great manager,’ said Matic.
‘My teammates have helped me to adapt very quickly. ‘I hope that I can still improve to give something to the team.’
