Chelsea tried to sign Portugal defender Cedric Soares before signing David Zappacosta, according to reports in Portugal.
Cedric was on Chelsea’s shortlist to strengthen the right wing back position during the summer transfer window.
Apparently, he wasn’t the club’s top target but he came under serious consideration after we had lost out on several of our top targets.
Chelsea lost out on Danilo to Manchester City, Dani Alves to Paris Saint Germain, Oxlade Chamberlain to Liverpool and Bayern’s Rafinha, all of whom were above Cedric on the club’s shortlist.
And according to Portuguese publication Record via popular Chelsea fan site The Shed End, Chelsea tried to sign Soares in the final hours of the transfer window.
However, Southampton weren’t intrested in selling the player which forced Chelsea to look elsewhere.
The report added that it wasn’t only Chelsea who tried to sign Soares but Southampton told all parties that the defender was not for sale.
Chelsea eventually signed Zappacosta in a £23m deal on the final day of the transfer window, after giving up on Soares.
We’ll be hoping Zappacosta goes on to prove himself here and goes on to become the perfect signing for us.
