Arsene Wenger has admitted Thomas Lemar didn’t want to leave Monaco in the summer transfer window.

The manager chased Lemar throughout the transfer window but failed to secure the services of the talented playmaker.

First it was widely reported that Monaco weren’t interested in selling him but Wenger has now revealed it was the player who decided against a move.

Wenger’s claim is likely to be true, considering reputable media houses reported on deadline day, that Arsenal had agreed a fee with Monaco that will see the player join for £92m. Although, the Gunners later pulled out of the deal, when it became apparent that it would take time to get the deal over the line.

In an interview with BEIN Sports, Wenger revealed it was always going to be difficult to convince the midfielder to move and it was his reluctance to leave Monaco that was the stumbling block to the transfer.

He said, as quoted by the Express: “Lemar chose to stay at Monaco. You have to respect what happens on the negotiation side.

“I know we live in an era of transparency but at some stage, to respect everybody, you have to not talk too much about that.

Liverpool were also interested in signing him and were unsuccessful, despite making two huge bids.

More clubs could join the race for the playmaker next season if he continues to perform for Monaco.

He is currently showing no sign of taking his foot off the gas, he put up a superb performance for France in their game against Netherlands on Thursday.
