Rodger’s predicting a top four finish for Liverpool

The big Liverpool news today ahead of this morning match against the Melbourne Victory in front of a crowd of 95,000 is that Liverpool have rejected an offer of £40 million plus £1 for their star striker Luis Suarez prompting American owner John Henry to tweet:

What do you think they’re smoking over there at Emirates?

Meanwhile the Liverpool manager expects to see an improvement on last season, and thinks that getting rid of a few players that did not fit into his long-term plan for the club will help, while at the same time bringing in some fresh faces that fit into the puzzle he is building at Anfield.

“We can get into the Champions League with players who are hungry – players who have that hunger to succeed,” he told The Anfield Wrap.

“With the right profile of player and the right level of coaching we can achieve that. We all want stars but the most important thing is you want players who are hungry to become stars.

“That’s what we have at the club now – players who are hungry. If we bring them in with a certain profile I think we’ve shown we are able to compete – and I would expect us to make a much better fist of competing for a top-four place this year.

“I hope we can make a big push this year. Playing in Europe is what this club is all about, it is what the history of this club is built on, and that is the aim.”

The Northern Irishman also believes that the club has come a long way since last season, and that he now has a group of players in place that he can build upon.

“I’ve seen a change – we’ve tried to grow the club in the last year and make sure we’ve got a real base to build on,” he added. “There was a much bigger job last year in terms of trying to get the balance within the squad right. We had players who needed to move on, really.

“We had big wage earners within the football club who weren’t contributing and we knew we had to move them on and find the right profile of player – and that’s what we have now.”

Rodgers said last week that the club is still looking to bring in a few more players, and we are yet to see that big name player that people have been talking about.

The latest signing is expected to be Ajax’s Danish international midfielder Christian Erikson with Liverpool believed to have already made a £18 bid.

Rodgers is certainly looking for youth and value in the market, yet you cannot help think that they need some type of out and out striker should Luis Suarez leave.

Real Madrid appears to be where he would like to go and the one thing you can say about the Spanish giants is the they will make Liverpool a proper offer unlike Arsenal who seem to be running out of options having missed out on all their other targets to other clubs who were prepared to pay more money, which means they will probably lose out on Suarez as well.
