Turkey national team manager Mircea Lusescu has revealed Arsenal tried to sign Arda Turan in the summer.
There were reports linking Arsenal with Turan in the summer but many people like myself chose not to believe those reports, perhaps because he wasn’t the kind of exciting signing we were expecting.
It has now emerged that Arsenal actually held a strong interest in the attacking midfielder and tried to sign him in the summer.
Speaking on TRT Spor as quoted by Turkish Football, Lusescu revealed he spoke with Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde about Turan and confirmed that the winger had the opportunity of moving to the Emirates.
“I spoke to Valverde, Arsenal made Arda an offer,” Lucescu said.
“Arda was on the verge of joining Arsenal this summer but it did not go through.”
Arsenal weren’t the only club that tried to sign Turan, as Monaco and Galatasaray were also keen.
“Galatasaray wanted him but it did not happen, same with Monaco,” he added.
“Arda is going through a tough time.”
Why Turan couldn’t secure a move away from Barcelona in the summer is a mystery considering he’s already fallen out of favor at the time.
Perhaps, Barca wanted too much for him and clubs balked at their demands.
Turan is yet to make a single appearance for Barcelona this season and has found himself out of place since he swapped Atletico for the Catalan giants in 2015.
