Pep Guardiola has refused to rule out renewing his interest in Sanchez.
Manchester City were desperate to sign Sanchez in the summer transfer window but Arsenal were reluctant to sell the Chilean.
When it became obvious that Sanchez won’t be signing a new deal, Arsenal gave in and accepted a £60m bid from the rival club on deadline day but inability to secure a capable replacement caused us to pull out of negotiations in the last minute.
And Guardiola has refused to rule out a move for the Chilean who would be a free agent next summer if he doesn’t sign an extension at Arsenal.
Although the City boss refused to mention Sanchez’s name, he insisted he will continue to improve his squad when asked about the possibility of making a new move for the Chilean.
‘The strikers we have are going to stay next season, hopefully,’ he said. ‘Add another player? Maybe. We are going to decide that.
‘So I think next season we have to shake the team again a little. Not in terms like this season, where it was a lot because the average age was 28 or 29, now we are a young team.
‘But we’ll buy players. We’ll try to analyse well and buy the right players like we did last season and this season.
‘You know my opinion on the players I have. Alexis, you know my opinion but he’s an Arsenal player so it’s not correct to talk about that, especially before we play them.
‘The transfer window is closed, so it’s not time to talk about that. I have respect for Arsenal and especially for my own players.
‘He (Sanchez) is an Arsenal player, his manager has to speak about him. You know the situation before when the transfer window was open, but now it’s closed. Let’s not talk about that.
‘He is such an important player for them, for the talent he has, and we have to try to control him. Let’s just focus on that.’
It’s no secret that Guardiola is a big admirer of Sanchez, who wouldn’t anyway? He is expected to try sign the Chilean for free next summer, after being angered by the way Arsenal handled negotiations last summer.
For City to have sanctioned a £60m for a player who had just one year left in his contract shows they are desperate and will do anything to sign him. They’ll definitely be among those trying to sign Sanchez when he decides to leave.
