Arsene Wenger’s plans to strengthen his squad next summer with the acquisition of Celtic defender Kieran Tierney have been dealt a massive blow with North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur understood to be leading the race for the signature of the exciting left back.

The youngster has been mightily impressive with his very accomplished displays, full of maturity well beyond his age. The 20-year-old is arguably Scotland’s brightest talent at the moment and has featured prominently in an all-conquering Celtic team who are undefeated domestically in the last 18months.

It is understood that Wenger who is keen to bolster his options at left back has been monitoring the defender, following the departure of Kieran Gibbs to West Bromwich Albion last summer and the successful conversion of Nacho Monreal to a central defender, the Gunners are currently left with Saed Kolasinac as the only left sided defender in the senior squad.

The gaffer’s plans to sign Tierney is however under serious threat from bitter rivals Tottenham who are looking to be in the driving seat to land the player. According to ESPN via Daily Cannon, Tottenham have stepped-up their scouting of him in an effort to beat Arsenal and Manchester United to his signature.

Spurs much like the Gunners, have also adopted a three man defense with the use of wing backs – a role that would very well suit the exciting Tierney, due to his attacking ability.

They however have both Danny Rose and Ben Davies in their ranks which highlights the Gunners greater need of Tierney.

With the North London derby just over a week away, not like it ever needs any spicing up but the news on the development in Tierney’s future will surely be fresh on the minds of both managers going into the game.
