Household names such as Andrey Arshavin, David Bentley and William Gallas head the list of released Premier League stars searching for new clubs. With the Elite looking to clear the way for fresh talent, high earning fringe players (experienced internationalists included) are hunting for pastures new or preparing for a summer on the golf course.
The early suggestion is that Gallas, 35, will return to France following successful stints at Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham. Arshavin on the otherhand has been long term linked with a return to Russia, but also has interest from big spenders in China and Dubai.
Arsenal released the largest number of players (14) perhaps paving the way for much promised big spending at the Emirates – only time will tell.
Fulham and Stoke shared an incredible 26 releases from their squads with a number of players already negotiating new employment. Swansea enjoyed a successful first season in the top flight and has rewarded their squad with the release of only long serving Mark Gower.
The list also includes the retiring figures of Paul Scholes and Jamie Carragher following career long dedication to their respective clubs Manchester United and Liverpool. Interestingly, Phil Neville also follows suit and is expected to take up a coaching role with David Moyes at United.
It is easy to forget a number of players were actually still under contract such as Roque Santa Cruz at Manchester City, having been a long term loanee to Spanish side Malaga. He is currently considering offers from Spain, Germany and America but is unlikely to remain in England due to excessive salary demands.
