Arsene Wenger has revealed he once tried to sign Gareth Barry.
Barry could become the player with the most capped Premier League appearance when Arsenal face West Brom on Monday night.
Wenger has now congratulated the former England international as he attempt to surpass Ryan Giggs’ record. In the process, the boss revealed he once tried to sign the midfielder but Manchester City won the race for his signature.
“We were interested in him when he moved from Villa to City but at the time City was the big investor,” said Wenger in his pre match press conference, as quoted by the Daily Cannon.
The midfielder is on course to make is 633rd Premier League appearance, having featured in four of West Brom’s appearances this season.
Barry has now joined the list of players Wenger tried to sign but couldn’t. Cristiano Ronaldo, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku, Vincent Kompany and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were some of the players Wenger didn’t manage to bring over to the Emirates.
He may not be an illustrious names like the others mentioned above, so Gooners would be less gutted about losing out on him. However, I think Barry could have become a club legend had he joined us in 2009.
