Arsene Wenger has denied claims that Sanchez was close to joining Manchester City on deadline day.
It was reported on Thursday afternoon that City verbally agreed a deal with Arsenal over the transfer of the striker but only for the Gunners to pull out of negotiations after failing to secure a replacement.
However, Wenger claims the Chilean was never close to joining City.
“It was not very close, it’s very difficult for me to speak about that because what I want now is the player to focus on his career, on his season and Arsenal,” the boss told beIN Sports, as quoted by the Daily Cannon.
“I always think first, make sure that my commitment is at the level that is expected from people paying me and have confidence in me. On the player’s side it is exactly the same.”
City held strong interest in Sanchez all summer and didn’t give up despite Wenger’s insistence that the forward will not be sold.
It could be true that City were actually close to signing Sanchez, if it weren’t so, Arsenal wouldn’t have made a £92m in desperation to sign Lemar.
Perhaps, we never know how close Sanchez was to joining City, reports claimed he had told his Chile teammates that he was closing in on a City move but it happened to be false.
