Arsene Wenger says he has been impressed with the recent improved performances of Theo Walcott.
The versatile forward had come under criticism for some ineffective showings in recent seasons, with some reports going as far as claiming Wenger was pondering moving him on if there was no upturn in performances before the turn of the year.
The gaffer while addressing the media before the victory over Red Star Belgrade admitted that the England international had not been at his best earlier in the campaign but he also admitted that he is delighted that the 28-year-old is now fully back in form.
“He had a good game in Borisov – it’s true the team was on a very good run. He looks back to a very good shape. I felt it took him a while to come back to his real level,”Wenger said reports Football.London via Daily Cannon
“He lost his place at the end of the season and he is now highly motivated and focused. I am impressed at what he is doing and with how he is coping with the situation.”
The winger didn’t disappoint the gaffer as he was again impressive in midweek as the Gunners maintained their perfect record in Europe with a narrow victory in Belgrade. Though he was unable to find the back of the net, it was Walcott who nodded the ball back into play for Olivier Giroud to score the game’s only goal with an overhead kick late in the game.
Walcott would need to keep delivering performances like these to work his way up the pecking order at the Emirates as he is yet to start a league game for the Gunners thus far this season.
He has however made four starts in cup competitions and so far has three goals and two assists to his name.
