Arsene Wenger has hinted he would prioritize the Premier League over the Europa League this season.
For the first time in twenty one years, Wenger failed to qualify Arsenal for the Champions League and getting back to the competition next season has become a priority.
Prior to our first Europa League game in over two decades, against Koln on Thursday, Wenger was asked if he would utilize the chance of qualifying for the Champions League via the Europa League, he responded:
“We don’t calculate that this is a way to qualify for the Champions League. It is not the best chance but one of the opportunities. I came out many times saying the best way to do it is the top four of the Premier League,” reports the Daily Cannon.
While I agree with Wenger that this isn’t the best chance to qualify for the UCL because of the tricky nature cup matches, I think it is also as important as qualifying via the league.
The Europa league also gives you the extra bonus of winning a title as you can only win the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League.
Focusing on the league may be safer because it offers you the opportunity to redeem yourself after a bad game or series of bad games but being realistic, the EL could be our best bet.
The level of competition between the Premier League’s big seven has made finishing in the top four even more difficult. Not trying to sound pessimistic but taking the EL serious as much as the league will be a wise thing to do.
